4-(methoxymethyl)benzyl chloride - Production method

M.Matsuo displaces bis-methoxymethylbenzene and p-chloromethyl chlorobenzyl in the presence of anhydrous zinc chloride in carbon tetrachloride solution, and the yield of 4-(methoxymethyl) chlorobenzyl is 70%.
Later, Gu Kequan et al. reacted bis-methoxymethylbenzene in the presence of concentrated hydrochloric acid and 50% H2SO4 in toluene solution at 65~70 ℃ for 2h, cooled and stratified, and then distilled. The fraction at 90~100 ℃/67Pa was 4-(methoxymethyl) chlorobenzyl in a yield of 85% ~ 90%.
